WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY!

  • Are you curious about the differences in life experiences that result from gender, race, class, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation?
  • Do you find yourself wondering how and why your society and culture differ from others?  Are you bothered by the misunderstandings and stereotypes people  have about others both in and outside your society?
  • Do you plan to study abroad while at Ohio Wesleyan or go into international work after graduation?  Do you worry about fitting into a culture different from your own?
  • Do you ever wonder about the wider social and cultural influences that shape even our most private and personal experiences?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, the department of sociology and anthropology may be just what you are looking for.  These two disciplines examine social and cultural diversity, social inequalities, and contemporary, often controversial, social issues such as poverty and homelessness, crime and social deviance, globalization and international conflict, race and ethnic relations, physical and mental health, and the changing roles of women and men in the U.S. and abroad.  Sociology and anthropology explore the differences both across cultures and within the United States in peoples’ experiences of such areas as family life, education, work, and religion.  Courses in five world regions further develop an appreciation for social and cultural variations, helping students understand the nature and im.pact of globalization.  The SOAN department offers both theoretical and applied approaches to these issues through our courses, independent study, and internships.  Our students often undertake internships and service-learning opportunities in and around Central Ohio as well as more widely within the United States and internationally.  Our students are highly represented among campus leaders and activists who seek greater social justice and understanding of difference in this world.  Our graduates carry these concerns with them as they find their own place in the wider society and world.

The department is located in Elliott Hall.  Please visit us!  The office (Elliott 211) is open 8:00-12:00 and 1:00-4:30 week days during the academic year.
